A horrific incident at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata has left a young doctor dead. The body of 31-year-old postgraduate trainee was found in one of the seminar rooms of this government-run hospital, causing shockwaves in the nation.
As per the reports, the Dr was on duty and she had dinner with her fellow mates she went to Seminar Hall as there was no room available to take a rest. The Doctor was found dead in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College around 11:30 am.
The details of the crime are shocking, with the doctor found lying semi-naked and brutally injured. Kolkata Police has launched a murder case and set up a special team to investigate the crime.
The Autopsy Report
The Autopsy report revealed that the victim died in the morning between 3 to 6 am. The report claims that multiple penetrations happened before and after the murder. Moreover, there were numerous injuries found on the dead body of the victim.
This includes injuries on the lips, abdomen, and fingers while a collar bone is broken. There were bloodstains on the face, eyes, and face, scratch marks on various parts of the body, and bleeding from the private parts.

After the investigation, the police arrested Sanjay Roy, the civic volunteer has now been arrested as the prime accused. It was through a recovered Bluetooth headset from the spot, which in turn led to his confession.

A Decision of the High Court
The incident triggered significant rage nationwide which resulted in a huge decision taken by High Court on 13 August 2024. The court asked the Police to hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
People are worried that the local police investigating the doctor’s murder may not do a proper job. This is because they believe that the local police are likely to mess up the evidence.

The principal of the college (Dr. Sandip Ghosh) where the tragic incident took place resigned from his job. Shockingly, he was soon appointed to the position of heading another reputed medical college in the city.
Surprisingly, he was soon appointed as the head of another prominent medical college which enraged people even more. However, the High Court has decided to give him extended leave from the re-appointment at the Calcutta National Medical College.
Father of Murdered Doctor
The victim’s father refuses to take the money as he believes that taking the money would betray his daughter’s memory. He is solely focused on ensuring the criminal is brought to justice.
He was grateful for the public support and protests and also stated that she was a bright student and seems to have had big dreams that one day becoming a gold medalist.
Developments in the Case
The guidelines made by the center for all hospitals to file a case within 6 hours in case of violence against doctors. Moreover, The Kolkata Police have arrested 5 more individuals for the vandalism at RG Kar Hospital.
The CBI team has submitted a copy of its FIR in the case before the Calcutta High Court. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has knocked on the doors of the Calcutta High Court for security, claiming threats to his life.
Heavy criticism was laid on the West Bengal government and the Kolkata Police by the Calcutta High Court for their failure to prevent a mob attack and vandalism at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on 14 August.
This incident is a complete failure of the state machinery. The CBI has convened eight doctors and other hospital staff for questioning in the rape and murder case of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The Socialist Unity Centre of India (Communist) called for a 12-hour statewide strike, while the Jadavpur University Teachers’ Association announced a protest against the incident.
