Why do we celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi?

Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated as the birth of Lord Ganesha or “the Lord of Beginnings”. As we all know Lord Ganesha is the eldest son of Lord Shiva and Lord Parvathi. There are two popular stories behind Ganesh Chaturthi 2024.

The first is Lord Parvati created Lord Ganesha to protect her while taking a bath in the absence of Lord Shiva. However, Lord Shiva came back home and wished to enter but Lord Ganesha came in the way of Shiva and thus angered him. Angered Lord Shiva beheaded the head of Baby Ganesha. When Goddess Parvati came to know this truth, she was extremely disappointed.

Ganesh Visarjan 2024 Date

Lord Shiva promised to bring Lord Ganesha back to life. He ordered his disciples to look for the head of the first living creature they noticed so that they could attach it to the body of Lord Ganesha. His devotees came back with the head of an infant elephant and replaced Ganesha’s head, to take him back to life. Further in this context, after this incident, Lord Shiva named Lord Ganesha “Ganapati: The leader of the Ganas”.

The second story behind this auspicious day was Devas requested Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati to draw out a person to help Devas. Hence, they created Lord Ganesha so that he could help Devas against rakshasas.

The Hindu Tradition

As per Hindu Tradition, there are three steps in every pooja Avahan (invitation or invocation), puja (worship), and Yathasthan (sendoff).
